About This Venue
Maynard’s has been open since 1914 — longer than most of the families who summer in Margate. Al Troiano bought it from Billy Maynard in 1966 and kept the name, the concrete floors, and the attitude. The bar was the anchor of Amherst Avenue back when that stretch was nicknamed the “Barbary Coast,” a block of college bars and late-night chaos. Most of those spots are gone, replaced by condos and upscale restaurants. Maynard’s is still standing.
NJ Monthly called it “the quintessential dive bar — in a good way.” The menu doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not: wings, cheeseburgers, nachos, fish & chips, blackened mahi mahi, pork roll, empanadas. Everything’s affordable. The pool table still works. The jukebox still gets played. Regulars still buy each other rounds.

15 beers on tap, daily drink specials, and some of the cheapest draft prices on the Shore. Sunday brunch 9am–12pm. The Bloody Marys are a point of local pride.
Maynard’s is also a genuine community anchor — the bar regularly hosts charity events and fundraisers for local organizations. This is the kind of place where the bartender knows your order and the regulars know your name.

The original room — concrete floors, pool table, jukebox, and the bar that’s been pouring drinks since 1914. This is where Quizzo has lived since 1999.
Starlite Garden
The enormous outdoor patio Al Troiano built by knocking down neighboring lots. Covered pavilion with soundproofing, outdoor bar, and a summer party vibe that runs until late.
Rear Bar Area
A back bar section popular with regulars looking for a slightly more relaxed spot away from the main crowd.
Outdoor Bar
Seasonal bar service outside with bay views across Amherst Ave. Drinks in plastic cups, unpretentious and perfect.

Maynard’s is a shore bar at heart — when the season ends, so does Tuesday night Quizzo. Plan accordingly and catch it while the weather’s right.

This is the one that started it all. Quizzo has been running at Maynard’s every Tuesday since 1999 — same bar, same energy, different questions. The indoor bar keeps it tight and competitive. Show up early if you want a good seat, because the regulars here don’t give them up easy.
